Debunking Misconception #1: BBB Only Sells Expired Food

Debunking Misconception #1: BBB Only Sells Expired Food

Yes, we’re called Beyond Best Before, but no, we don’t only sell products past their Best Before Date - That Would Be Discriminating!

One common misconception is that we only sell products that are past their best before date.-while our name might suggest otherwise, we don’t exclusively offer items that are past their best before date.

Some common reasons food is wasted include:

  1. It’s cheaper to discard than to resell or donate – Businesses sometimes choose to dispose of products rather than deal with the logistics of finding a buyer or recipient. Transportation costs, storage, and administrative efforts can make discarding the easiest option.
  2. Over-forecasting – Retailers and suppliers try to predict demand, but when they overestimate, they’re left with surplus stock.
  3. Overproduction – Some manufacturers produce more than they can sell, leading to excess stock with nowhere to go.
  4. Underweight products – Items like cheese or chocolate bars that don’t meet weight requirements can’t be sold at full price, even though they’re perfectly fine.
  5. Packaging changes or redesigns – If a brand updates its logo or packaging, retailers may refuse to stock the "old" version, even if the product inside is identical.
  6. Seasonal products – Holiday or limited-edition items often become "unsellable" once the season passes, even if they’re still fresh.
  7. Retailer shelf space limits – Supermarkets prioritize new inventory and often remove slower-selling products before they expire.
  8. Company closures – When businesses go into administration, their remaining stock often needs to be cleared out quickly.

At Beyond Best Before, we rescue these products and give them a second chance
